I've always seen art as a bird, soaring freely through the sky to the farthest reaches of the world. Whenever I create a new piece, I feel that same sense of flight. In the beginning, it was just "Yellow Bird," because I was flying alone. But as beautiful souls with Down syndrome joined our journey, we became "Yellow Birds."Our growing circle is a symbol of our unity, our love, and the beautiful bond we've formed.
Yellow is more than just a color to me; it’s a shadow that follows me everywhere. It represents energy, joy, and a freshness that resonates with my own spirit.
Everything in our world begins with MAZDA’Ks lines. As an artist with Down Syndrome, MAZDAK draws the first stroke, and from there, our story unfolds.
In our studio, I (MARAL) take fragments of MAZDAK’s intuitive drawings and merge them with my own illustrations.
This partnership is a fusion of two worlds: the 46-chromosome and the 47-chromosome perspectives.
Together, we create a "New World" where neurodiversity is the core of every character we bring to life. We believe that extraordinary art doesn’t require complex tools; it requires powerful ideas.
Using simple materials, we write and illustrate stories that reflect the daily lives and unique worldviews of people with Down Syndrome.
This collaborative technique has led to numerous international awards in book illustration and the creation of our award-winning animation, "FILKOOL.
For us, MAZDA’Ks rhythmic lines are not just art—they are the beginning of everything we do at Yellow Birds Art Studio.
Together with a group of children with Down syndrome, we approach strangers and ask them for a simple, beautiful gift: the chance to draw their faces. With their own unique style and intuition, our young artists set to work, capturing the lines, the light, and the quiet soul of the person sitting before them. But something remarkable happens in the meantime.
A conversation unfolds.
The stranger becomes a friend. The silence between pencil and paper fills with stories, laughter, and shared humanity.
And at the end, when the portrait is complete, we present it as a gift—a keepsake of a moment of genuine connection, drawn from a place of pure heart. This is more than a drawing.
It is an invitation—to see, to listen, and to welcome the presence of children with Down syndrome into the fabric of our society.
It is a reminder that art has the power to build bridges: between people, between worlds, and between all of us.
My acquaintance with children with Down syndrome began through my brother MAZDAK (a boy with Down syndrome).
As a starting point, he introduced me to a world of feelings and intimacy that I had never experienced before. With his pure feelings, he lit a wonderful spark of love for these special children in my heart.
This was the start that led me to teach creativity to these amazing children. This experience is full of lessons that cannot be easily forgotten. They brought me into a world of creativity and honesty, where every piece I create is not only full of art, but also full of love and human connection.
